Helpful Guidelines Homeowners Should Follow When Shopping For Cotton Rugs
There are 2 steps which you must take to wash a massive needle point rug. Also remember that you will have some foot traffic patterns with which to be concerned.
First of all, you need to get some plastic sheeting to put beneath the rug if it is not on a waterproof floor, for example vinyl. You’ll need some frothing carpet cleaner and a rug cleaning machine that doesn’t have rotating bristles. If the machine contains an upholstery tool, you can use that so long as it does not have any rotating bristles. When it comes to cleaning a needlepoint rug, consider it as a big piece of upholstery that should be cleaned.
Before you use the foaming carpet protection cleaners, do a spot test in a small unobtrusive location to make certain of its color fastness. Spray on the foam, then let it sit for 10 or fifteen minutes, then wipe it up with a wet rag. Do not scrub the area ; wipe it up gently. Do not continue if there is any color in the foam, other than the mud from the surface. If the spot test turns out fine then you may use the foam on the other areas. Even though the directions on the can may instruct to clean the foam into the rug, do not do so with a yarn rug. Instead employ a damp material and work it around a little so that it will give the surface with adequate coverage. Then let it sit for 10 minutes or so, then wipe the surface with a wet rag to take away the foam. Then wipe the surface carefully with a slightly wetter rag, and wash it often .
After that spray acceptable carpet protection foam over the entire rug so that it will spread from one end to the other. Do not spray a thick layer of froth, but only enough to cover it. Then work it around thoroughly with a wet fabric ( as before ), then let it sit for approximately ten mins. At that point, the froth should be nearly gone. Then go over the surface with the carpet machine and lukewarm water. Suck out as much water as possible as the rug should not be sopping wet. Also, do not rub hard on the surface of the rug when it is damaged as the yarns could get damaged.
The rug should dry as quickly as possible. For the initial drying, you may hang it up outside over a line or railing. If you are not ready to do so, put towels under the rug and set up a fan to blow across the top. When the rug is terribly close to becoming dry, take it off the line and lay it on the floor where it can dry flat. Do not walk on it or place furniture on it till the rug is totally dry.
Cotton fibers will weaken and eventually rot with time, so you want to bear in mind that this may occur with your cotton rugs. Also, the rugs will be even more exposed to breaking or tearing when they’re wet because of the further weight on the threads. The condition of the rugs may be further damaged when they experience the agitation process in a washing machine, even when the machine is on the gentle cycle. Therefore if the rugs are not clean enough after the 1st washing, you might need to use the old fashioned “boil” method. Boiling is the best means of cleaning a particularly old rug if the dust is quite uncooperative , however , you may not be in a position to find a pan that is large enough with which to boil the rug.
In order to divide long woven hall runners, you’ll cut across the width, not along the length of the rug. I you have tied fringes on the ends of the rug, you would want the new ends to look the same. In order to do this process, cut the rug, then unravel many rows of weaving so that you’re going to get sufficient warp thread to tie in knots ; there’ll be some loss in the length of the rug. This procedure must be accomplished quickly or more rows will unravel. It is best to enlist the services of a mate who has done some weaving to help as you are prepared to cut. You may also do this process by sewing across the end row using a heavy duty machine, which will definitely minimize the raveling , however , the machine seam will be clear.
